Chapter 10

It was the third overnight shift in a row Lebron and Jayvon worked this week. They were sleepy because their bodies wouldn’t adjust to their new schedule. Their shifts rotated every month. Next month they would be back on first shift. The following month they would be on the second shift. This confused their bodies a little. While at home, during the day, Jayvon couldn’t sleep because he had to care for Grandma Emma. It would be pointless to fall asleep only to be interrupted minutes later. Lebron, on the other hand, couldn’t adjust to the shift because he wasn’t a night owl. He liked day shifts best, but the grave yard shift was growing on him.

“Let’s stop for a bite to eat, my stomach over here rumbling louder than the motor.” Jayvon said. He was too busy making sure Ms. Emma was cared for that he forgot to feed himself.

“Where you want to stop at?”

“Anywhere that sells coffee and a meal. Now I understand why police live in Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks.” Jayvon rubbed his belly.

“This third shift shit is for the birds. I miss my bed, ain’t shit going on during the night shift.” Lebron eyes rolled from tiredness and frustration.

“I feel you on that man,” Jayvon laughed. “But on the same note, I can’t complain because I need this gig. I’m still thanking my lucky stars for even getting the opportunity to be an officer.” Jayvon testified. He was a street guy but had never gotten caught and never spent any time in behind bars. So for God to allow him this chance is amazing to him.

Lebron pulled into the packed waffle house parking lot. He was going to keep going until he head Jayvon’s stomach again. He double parked and they went in to place their orders. Jayvon got a full pancake breakfast with all the trimmings. While Lebron decided on a smothered pork chop dinner. With a full stomach, the boys were now ready for bed. Lebron dosed off a few times while sitting in the car at the light. Jayvon was also in and out of sleep during this time.

“Maybe you should just pull over for a minute, man.” Jayvon suggested.

“I think I should. I can’t keep my eyes open for shit.” Lebron yawned. He wanted his bed.

He pulled over on a quiet street and they got a little shut eye. There wasn’t a car or a person for blocks. Jayvon and Lebron took advantage of this time. They were enjoying their sleep until a female’s voice came across the radio. There was a disturbance at a local club. All units were asked to respond.

Jayvon picked up the radio and confirmed that they were en route to the club in question. Lebron wiped the saliva from his mouth and started the car back up. He was actually angry his sleep was broken. Jayvon took a swig of his coffee that he got from the Waffle House.

They approached the scene that resembled that of a riot.
